There were few envelopes that arrived through the post that brought as much joy to my mother as a catalogue from a certain well-known garden shop. The eagerly awaited issue, packed with glorious flowers and shrubs as well as fruit and vegetable seeds was a cornucopia of delight for an avid gardener. In the depths of winter as rain pelted the windows, hours were spent pouring through the pages, envying the sheltered inland gardens that could nurture the delicate blossoms advertised within those pages, then choosing the hardy flora that might have a chance of survival in the exposed windswept coastal garden around our home. That seed order brought a delightful anticipation of spring, of days that would be spent in the garden.
Not being the committed gardener my mother was, my own gardening exploits have not been so well-planned. However today, on a wet and windy afternoon in February, I find myself online browsing through the websites and social media pages of the garden centres on Wexford Garden Trail with ideas of improving my own garden this year. Now is the perfect time to start planning.
This is the time of year to plan ahead and order your seeds. Despite the current Level 5 restrictions that the COVID pandemic has brought upon us, it is possible to buy all kinds of bulbs and seeds here in Wexford. Newly arrived potato seed, packets of vegetable and flower seeds and much more besides. What’s more, it can all be done from the comfort of your own home. Each Garden Centre has different options available. Generally, orders can be made online or by telephone. In all cases, orders will be delivered. Contactless, keeping everyone safe.
