Blackstairs Mountains

The Blackstairs form an integral part of Ireland’s heritage. Its natural cover harboured many rebels during the 1798 Rebellion, the bloodiest conflict in Ireland’s modern Irish history. The highest peak is Mount Leinster (795m), dominating the surrounding skyline.

The name Leinster comes from the Irish Laighin, the ancient name of the province whose king was buried beneath a cairn here before the time of Christ.  The Blackstairs mountain is the second highest peak.

Mountains to Sea….

Over half of County Wexford’s border is bounded by the sea. As a result, our coast has some of the most fantastic, interesting and, in some instances, rare sea and bird life, seaweed, grasses and flowers along our shores. Not surprisingly, fresh fish adorns the menus of restaurants, cafes and pubs in small villages and towns along the coast.

County Wexford boasts some of the longest unbroken stretches of coastline in the country. A haven for bathers and fishermen, with an abundance of sandy beaches and interesting coves to explore.
